Spawn: In The Demon's Hand (スポーン イン ザ デーモンズ ハンド) is a Capcom arcade game first released in Japan circa 1999. It was later ported to the Dreamcast in 2000 with additional hidden characters.

Characters[]

Arcade Roster[]

In the Arcade version of the game, only these characters are playable:

Government agent Al Simmons was assassinated by conspiracy and resurrected as a hellspawn by the demon lord Malebolgia. Now he wanders the labyrinth of blood and bullets.
Former cop, now private eye seeks only one thing....justice! Look out, bad guys! He has obvious toughness and unexpected smartness!
Though His manners are cold and sarcastic, he is really warm in heart. But don't forget, no one has escaped from his clear gunsight.
This great sorcerer has lived centuries to find the way to defeat the demon lord. Actually, he is one of the hellspawns reanimated by the demon lord himself.
Jessica Priest
Beautiful Assassin
Beautiful assassin who has killed Spawn. She loves and enjoys her job, just like a cat loves catching andtoying [sic] a frightened mouse.
Another hellspawn who was given burning limbs and stony armor. Out of confusion at last, now he wants to see the situation and retribution.
Hot blooded fighting angel who claims herself the best hunter. Now she is absolutely ardent to prove her words are doubtless true!
In spite of her innocent beauty, this angel never hesitates to decapitate her enemy. It is nothing of sins to destroy an evil, but a sacred and... yes, joyful duty!
To prevent hellspawns' contamination, scientists of the heaven have kidnapped and brainwashed a man to be a heartless soldier. It is him, who redeems the earth from demons.
A gigantic and savage battle cyborg who was invented for mob war. Hiding human soul under the skin of monster, he smashes opponents with huge knuckles.
Blood-thirst demon Violator, who has come to torture Spawn, is his true form. Temporarily in humorous disguise, but still has unearthly power and cruelty.

A couple of other characters are also playable after a certain amount of time has passed or by inputting a code:

  • Spawn I
  • Spawn IV
  • Dark Ages Spawn
  • Admonisher

Many of the NPCs were also made available to the Arcade version by downloading them from the official Japanese websites onto the user's VMU and connecting it to an arcade machine.[2][3] In the Dreamcast version, these characters can be unlocked without having to download them. These characters are:

  • Overtkill
  • Soleil
  • Angels Enemy
  • Soldier 1
  • Wolf 1
  • The Curse
  • Curse Subordinate
  • The Mafia
  • Army A
  • Hell Spawn
  • Zombie 1
  • Skeleton 1
  • Vandalizer
  • Vacillator
  • Vindicator
  • Vaporizer
  • Admonisher
  • Gate Keeper

It should be noted that the unlockable Admonisher and the VMU downloadable Admonisher were technically two different characters, despite being identical in every way. Additionally, Malebolgia appears as an unplayable boss and Clown can transform into his true form, Violator, during gameplay.

Trivia[]

  • Spawn: In the Demon's Hand is one of the games that's featured on the Capcom Taisen Fan Disc, a disc that came with the original Japanese release of Capcom vs. SNK 2 on the Dreamcast. It included savefiles for many different Capcom games, including Spawn: In the Demon's Hand. The savefile has all characters, items and weapons, and some of the gallery unlocked (only the ? boxes remain locked; see below for the reason).
  • In the game there are five unique items (Earring of Spawn, Spawn Figure, Spawn Comic, Sign, Bikini of Steel) that appears in Boss Attack mode. Collecting a certain number of these would unlock one of the ? boxes in the Gallery. In the Western versions of the game, the ? boxes are simply a collection of in-game screenshots. However, in the Japanese version, these ? boxes actually revealed instructions for the player to send in a contest application to Capcom to enter a contest to win certain items. Each of the five ? boxes also had a secret letter that also must be included in one of the applications. The deadline for all five contests was November 30, 2000, and the contest winners were announced on the official Dreamcast homepage on the 27th of December, 2000.[4]
    • Collecting eight Earring of Spawn would allow the player to enter a contest to win a "Spawn Arcade Edition Soundtrack CD" and a "Spawn Arcade Edition Poster" that's signed by Todd McFarlane. The secret letter is .
    • Collecting fourteen Spawn Figures would allow the player to enter a contest to win a Spawn: In the Demon's Hand figurine, signed by Todd McFarlane. The secret letter is .
    • Collecting ten Spawn Comics would allow the player to enter a contest to win a "Commemorative 100th Issue North American Spawn comic" and the "latest Spawn comic", signed by Todd McFarlane. The secret letter is .
    • Collecting five Signs would allow the player to enter a contest to win an "original Dreamcast Spawn Poster", signed by Todd McFarlane. The secret letter is .
    • Collecting three Bikini of Steel would allow the player to enter a contest to win either a "Todd McFarlane World Image Video" or a "Hardball Baseball", signed by Todd McFarlane. The secret letter is .
      • Additionally, there was a second round of the contest where those that combined all five characters together and guessed the correct phrase would win an original illustration along with comics signed by Todd McFarlane The letters were , , , and . The correct phrase, when putting each character together, is "名古屋分室" (Nagoya Branch Office), referring to Capcom's studio in Nagoya, which is where Spawn: In the Demon's Hand was developed. Only two people were able to guess the correct phrase, so eight extra people who lost in the first round were picked at random to also receive a prize. The winners of this round was announced on January 2, 2001.[4]
  • Despite being referred to as Dark Ages Spawn in-game, Dark Ages Spawn bears more of a resemblance to Medieval Spawn. Furthermore, the image used in his ending is an illustration of Medieval Spawn, and he is referred to as "Medieval Spawn" on the spawn.com website.[5] Though not confirmed, this suggests that he was renamed to Dark Ages Spawn late into development due to the legal issues with Neil Gaiman over the ownership of Medieval Spawn and Angela.
